French Impressionist Oil of Young Child Circa 1900 Signed

Description: Stanislas Torrents y de Amat (French 1839-1916) French Impressionist Oil on Canvas, Circa 1900; portrait of a young boy, inscribed and signed lower right: a bon ami gravier (to my good friend gravier) / Torrents. Paper label on back. Framed. Note: Born in Marseilles, the eighth child of a wealthy Spanish family, Stanislas Torrents attended drawing school from 1851 to 1856, after which he went to Paris in 1861 where he began painting in the studio of Thomas Couture. He studied the Old Masters, most notably one of his greatest influences: Diego Velasquez. In 1866 he was awarded a prize from the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and traveled and worked in Rome from 1868 to 1871. Returning to Marseille in 1873, he became the favorite painter of Jules Cantini and Jules Charles-Roux for whom he painted commissions. From there he moved from Paris to Spain, eventually settling in Marseilles in 1885. In 1904 he retired to Cannes. In 1919, his son Pierre bequeathed 262 paintings to the Museum of Fine Arts in Marseilles
